Cross-modality temporal processing deficits in developmental phonological dyslexics.

چکیده

Neuroanatomical evidence suggests that poor readers may have abnormal lateral (LGN) and medial (MGN) geniculate nuclei responsible for temporal processing in visual and auditory domains respectively (Livingstone & Galaburda, 1993). Although behavioral evidence does support this neuroanatomical evidence in that poor readers have performed poorly on visual and auditory tasks thought to require the utilization of the LGN and MGN, respectively, appropriate examination of the coexistence of these behavioral abnormalities in the same population of poor readers has yet to take place. The present study examined correlations between visual and auditory temporal processing scores of all readers (collapsed groups), good readers, and poor readers who were isolated into phonological and surface dyslexic subtypes. The same subjects and data from Cestnick and Coltheart (1999) and Cestnick and Jerger (2000) were used to run the analyses. Results demonstrated a multitude of correlations between these tasks for the phonological dyslexic group only. It is contended that cross-modality temporal processing deficits may exist in poor nonlexical (phonological dyslexics) as opposed to poor lexical (surface dyslexics) readers. It is conceivable that phonological dyslexics may also have deficiencies within the LGN and MGN, or perhaps within systems related to these nuclei. The precise cause of these processing patterns and correlations is still unknown.

Auditory evoked potential patterns to voiced and voiceless speech sounds in adult developmental dyslexics with persistent deficits.

Auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) were recorded from eight developmental dyslexic adults with persistent reading, spelling and phonological deficits, and 10 non-dyslexic controls to voiced (/ba/) and voiceless (/pa/) consonant-vowel syllables. Consistent with previous data, non-dyslexics coded these stimuli differentially according to the temporal cues that form the basis of the voiced/voiceles...

Speech-perception-in-noise deficits in dyslexia.

Speech perception deficits in developmental dyslexia were investigated in quiet and various noise conditions. Dyslexics exhibited clear speech perception deficits in noise but not in silence. Place-of-articulation was more affected than voicing or manner-of-articulation. Speech-perception-in-noise deficits persisted when performance of dyslexics was compared to that of much younger children mat...

Auditory and visual automatic attention deficits in developmental dyslexia.

Several studies have provided evidence for a phonological deficit in developmental dyslexia. However, recent studies provide evidence for a multimodal temporal processing deficit in dyslexia. In fact, dyslexics show both auditory and visual abnormalities, which could result from a more general problem in the perceptual selection of stimuli. Here we report the results of a behavioral study showi...

Sequential processing deficits of reading disabled persons is independent of inter-stimulus interval

Developmental dyslexia is a language-based learning disability with frequently associated non-linguistic sensory deficits that have been the basis of various perception-based theories. It remains an open question whether the underlying deficit in dyslexia is a low level impairment that causes speech and orthographic perception deficits that in turn impedes higher phonological and reading proces...

Temporal processing and phonological impairment in dyslexia: effect of phoneme lengthening on order judgment of two consonants.

The evidence of supporting phonological deficit as a cause of developmental dyslexia has been accumulating rapidly over the past 2 decades, yet the exact mechanisms underlying this deficit remain controversial. Some authors assume that a temporal processing deficit is the source of the phonological disorder observed in dyslexic children. Others maintain that the phonological deficit in dyslexia...
